On Wednesday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN, Pierre LeBrun said that the 36-year-old was not ready to retire and wants to return for an 18th season in the National Hockey League.

"He is not ready to retire. He is committed to playing another NHL season but he doesn't have an NHL home. Now probably ideally [it] would be where his family has lived the last few years in Minnesota but the Wild have not shown interest in bringing him back and I don't think that's going to happen. A return to Canada where he finished the season with the Montreal Canadiens, probably not in the cards right now either. The preference for Eric Staal is to find a good fit in the U.S., that's where his camp is working on now. He is committed to trying to come back for another year," LeBrun said.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario native split time between the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens during the 2020-21 season. In 53 regular season games, Staal had 13 points (5 G, 8 A), ten penalty minutes, and was a -30. He added eight points (2 G, 6 A) in 21 playoff games during Montreal's run to the Stanley Cup Final.
