There was a great deal of speculation heading into this season that forward Travis Zajac would likely either remain a New York Islander or return to New Jersey in 2021-22, but the 36-year-old has instead opted to hang up the skates.

Zajac, a 15-season NHL veteran, suited up in 1024 regular season games for the New Jersey Devils - the team that drafted him in the first round (20th overall) back in 2004.

He was acquired by the man who drafted him, Lou Lamoriello, back before last season's trade deadline along with teammate Kyle Palmieri, and joined the Islanders for 13 regular season games and 14 postseason games on their recent conference finals run.

Zajac shared the news in a touching video on Monday to say goodbye to the game and the fans that he loves so much.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has elected to sign a one-day contract with the New Jersey Devils to retire where it all started.

All the best to Travis and his family on the next chapter of their lives.
