Igor Larionov II, the son of three-time Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall-of-Famer Igor Larionov, says he had a professional tryout lined up with an NHL team, but lost it due to illness. And, no, COVID-19 was not involved.

"In the last 2 weeks I've: signed an NHL PTO, tested positive for mono, lost PTO due to severity of mono, spent a night in the ER due to complications with my spleen," said Larionov II on Twitter.

"Long road of recovery ahead, but excited for the journey. both physically & mentally."

The 23-year-old spent some time in the QMJHL, OHL, USHL, and Russia's VHL before playing with Kunlun Red Star of the KHL last season. He has never been drafted by an NHL team and this could have served as his big break.

"I wanted to thank everyone for the kind words during these difficult days, especially my friends and family. also a special thank you to @regankemper. I don't know where i would be without your support," Larionov II added.

Besides the Stanley Cups and being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Larionov Sr. won two Olympic gold medals, was a member of the Detroit Red Wings' famed "Russian Five" and was instrumental in forcing the Soviet government to let Soviet players compete in the National Hockey League.
