Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL implemented a taxi squad last season that allowed non rostered players to travel with the team in case of injury. The purpose of this was to limit travel that would normally occur if an AHL player was called up during the season.

Thankfully, we are slowly beginning to move along from the pandemic, though not entirely. As such, the league still has to think certain things through that would not have been considered in prior seasons under normal circumstances. According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, NHL general mangers have let it be known that they are concerned about what may happen if there were an injury or illness to one of their two goalies throughout the 2021-22 season. In response to this, deputy commissioner said that we may see an addition of a «goalie taxi squad» for this upcoming season.

Daly also said that this idea would operate similarly to the taxi squad situation last season. This would certainly make sense as teams normally carry extra skaters but not goaltenders, so it would give them insurance if something happened to either of their regular netminders. As mentioned, the pandemic has not yet gone away entirely, meaning there may be some other changes announced as well as we continue to inch closer to the 2021-22 campaign.
