Despite rumors running rampant lately that Tomas Hertl is unhappy and the San Jose Sharks may have to trade him, general manager Doug Wilson said he hopes to keep the 27-year-old long-term.

Hertl is set to enter the final season of his four-year, $22.5 million deal. Given the fact that he is soon set to become an unrestricted free agent, paired with he fact he was reportedly not happy with the way the Sharks coaching staff dealt with (or failed to deal with) his teammate in Evander Kane, many expected him to be dealt prior to or during the 2021-22 season. However, that may not be the case.

According to well known insider Elliotte Friedman, word around the league is that Wilson has told other general managers that his goal is to make things work with Hertl. This means that he would prefer to sign him long-term rather than deal him to another team. Friedman also said that this message will be delivered to Hertl as well, once he arrives at training camp in less than 10 days. The Czech forward played in 50 games last season, scoring 19 goals and 43 points.
