Jack Johnson is being given a change to get back in the game. The defenceman, who missed a major portion of last season after undergoing core muscle repair surgery, has signed a professional tryout contract with the Colorado Avalanche. That means he'll attend the team's training camp and, if he can show he's worth it, possibly earn a contract with the Avs.

Johnson played just 13 games with the New York Rangers last season, managing to score one goal. Before that, he played two season in Pittsburgh. He's a former third overall pick and once a highly-touted prospect. While he's had some good offensive seasons - his best being 42 points with the LA Kings in 2010-11 - Johnson's defensive play has always left something to be desired, and it seems to have gone down even further over the last few seasons.

Johnson is just 50 games shy of 1000 in the NHL, so he could reach that mark in the upcoming season if he can find a team to play for. He has 71 goals and 303 points over that span.
