The Montreal Canadiens appear to be entering a trendy new collectibles market after an incredible 2020-21 postseason run that saw an underdog Habs team play their way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Habs announced on Tuesday that they will release a line of NFT's or non-fungible tokens to highlight their sensational run. The first wave of NFT's will be available on Thursday with more release dates scattered throughout the month of September.

For those who don't know what a non-fungible token is, it's essentially a piece of digital art collectible that only exists in a digital marketplace. When someone buys a NFT, they own it, the same way they'd own a physical piece of memorabilia.

France Margaret Bélanger, President, Sports and Entertainment, Groupe CH had this to say regarding the new collectibles:

"On the heels of an unforgettable season, we're thrilled to provide fans with a unique way to own a digital piece of history in a format that recalls traditional card collecting familiar to generations. In taking this pack model approach, we're hoping to make NFT ownership viable to as wide an audience as possible, and allow collectors of all ages and means the chance to participate in this initiative."

Apparently the works of digital art will be separated into two categories. The "Base" works will be priced at $25 CAD and the "Rare" works will be priced at $50 CAD.

I'm not sure I entirely understand the fascination behind digital collectibles, but to each their own, I suppose.
