The Carolina Hurricanes recently put the Montreal Canadiens in a sticky situation after they gave Jesperi Kotkaniemi an offer sheet for 1 year at $6.1 million. This came in retaliation of the Canadiens giving Sebastian Aho an offer sheet in 2019, which the Carolina Hurricanes ultimately ended up matching. Now, it seems that the Hurricanes may be getting another center.
According to insider Eric Engels, he has had some contact with executives inside the league, and it sounds like the Canadiens are leaning towards letting Jesperi Kotkaniemi walk. Along with this, he also thinks that the Habs will trade for Arizona Coyotes center Christian Dvorak. This could all happen within the next 24 hours, which would definitely shake up the NHL quite a bit.
The Habs definitely need center depth, but is Kotkaniemi with a $6.1 million salary actually going to be it? Is Christian Dvorak the answer to the problem? We will know the answer to all of these questions Saturday at the latest, which is the last day for the Canadiens to match Carolina's offer.
Engels on 590 says based on phone calls he's made it seems the Habs are leaning towards letting KK walk. Also, he expects the Habs to trade for Dvorak and that something may happen in the next 24 hrs #GoHabsGo— Habs Knuckle Sandwich (@CHknuckSandy) August 31, 2021
