This one is strange, to say the least. Former NHLer Cory Conacher, who spent last season playing in Switzerland and intends to play there again this season, has been suspended and fined by that country's anti-doping agency for taking insulin. It's not that insulin is a banned substance, it's that Conacher failed to apply for permission to take it.

According to reports, Conacher received a three month ban and was fined 2500 Swiss Francs, the equivalent of just under $2800 USD. He has agreed to the punishment and has submitted his application to take insulin. His suspension runs from May 5th to August 5th.

Conacher is a Type 1 Diabetic who often wears an insulin pump when not on the ice. He was diagnosed with the condition at the age of eight.

Conacher played a total of 193 regular season games in the NHL, starting with Tampa Bay, then to Ottawa, Buffalo and the New York Islanders, before returning to Tampa Bay for a second stint. He's also played for several teams at the AHL level. During his NHL career, the 31-year-old forward recorded 28 goals and 75 points.
