Some tragic news coming out of Minnesota on Sunday which has had a devastating impact on the NCAA and the broader hockey community as well, as it was announced that Mack Motzko was killed in a car accident on Saturday night near Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. Mack, 20, was the son of the University of Minnesota Gophers head coach Bob Motzko.

Gophers athletic director Mark Coyle released a brief statement on Sunday morning on behalf of the University of Minnesota's Athletic Department.

"We are devastated for Bob, Shelley, their family and all involved," said Coyle. "This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we will do everything we can to support those affected. We ask for privacy for the families, as they mourn the loss of loved ones."

After graduating from St. Cloud Cathedral High School in 2020, Motzko played for both the USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede and the NAHL's New Mexico Ice Wolves last season.

What an absolute tragedy. Our hearts go out to the Motzko family, the University of Minnesota Gophers, the Sioux Falls Stampede, the New Mexico Ice Wolves and all of Mack's extended family and teammates.

20 is far too early to go. Rest in peace, Mack. Our hockey sticks will be left out front for you.
