The Washington Capitals have some big decisions to make in net, and now, it appears they're holding off a major extension for the time being.

This season has been a shocking one for the Washington Capitals, as they are well on their way to being the No. 1 team in the NHL heading into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a spot no one predicted that they would be in.

While the offense has been incredible, the team are riding some great goaltending as well, with the duo of Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren leading the way to the fourth best GAA in the NHL at 2.47.

Both goaltenders are set to hit free agency this summer, and the team are now reportedly weighing up a major extension for one or the other, but that may come with consequences, according to NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun.

«I think there's also some concern from Caps management that if they extend one goalie now and not the other, it could have a negative impact on the dressing room. The Caps will continue to talk to the respective agents for both goalies, and I assume they'll end up signing at least one of them, but they're going about it very carefully for the time being.»

Given that both have played incredibly well this season, it makes sense that they want one of them on a long-term deal, but to hand that to one and not the other could certainly lead to disharmony in the locker room.

At 27-years of age with a Stanley Cup run behind him, it's clear that Thompson is the best choice for Washington, as he's tallied a 2.13 GAA and a .924 save percentage on the year, but at this point, it's tough to see where they'd go, as they have the familiarity and long relationship with Lindgren.

Ultimately, they'd be fine with either one as their goaltender for the next 4-5 years, but given the flow they've been in, it makes sense that they don't want to disrupt that, so don't expect an announcement on an extension anytime soon.
