According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Vancouver Canucks are buying out the contract of forward Jake Virtanen.

The move comes a few months after an unnamed woman accused Virtanen of allegedly sexual assaulting her in a Vancouver hotel room in September 2017. Following the allegations, the Canucks placed Virtanen on a leave of absence in early May.

Because of Virtanen's age, the Canucks are only subject to a 1/3 cap penalty, rather than the standard 2/3 according to CapFriendly. Vancouver will have a cap penalty of $50,000 in 2021-22, and $500,000 in 2022-23.

In 38 games this season, Virtanen had 5 points (5 G), 41 penalty minutes, and was a -5.
