Report: Seattle did NOT take Kerfoot and the real pick is going to piss off a lot of Leafs fans
Spoiler alerts galore coming from DFO Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli on Wednesday a little over 8 hours before the Seattle Kraken were set to announce their expansion draft selections.
One such spoiler claims that new Maple Leafs acquisition Jared McCann is the pick heading to Seattle, over the heavily rumoured Alexander Kerfoot.
Leafs fans are going to have a field day with this one. Not only do the Leafs appear to be running it back with much of the same group - the same group that blew a 3-1 series lead to Montreal in the first round of the playoffs - but a potentially useful piece that they JUST acquired that may have actually improved their team is lost for nothing in the expansion draft.
Leafs GM Kyle Dubas may still have a few cards up his sleeve, but it's hard to see much of a silver lining if Seravalli's sources are giving him good Intel. If there is one, it's basically that the cost of acquisition for McCann was low, at a B prospect (Filip Hållander) and a future 7th-round draft pick.
The picture should become a little more clear in the coming week as the NHL Entry Draft is scheduled to take place this weekend (July 23rd, 24th) and free agency opens up at noon ET on July 28th.
The Leafs could also make a big splash as early as Thursday July 22nd, when the roster freeze is lifted.
Boy oh boy.. if Dubas loses McCann and doesn't make a few impactful and exciting moves to draw Leafs fans back in, it could be a very long summer and a tenuous beginning to the 2021-22 season for Toronto.
