Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber's health status is a subject of great concern for both Habs fans and hockey fans alike, as one of the best blueliners of this era may be heading towards an early retirement due to persistent injury.

Weber and the Habs enjoyed a sensational, albeit surprising run in 2020-21 after limping in as the 16th seed in the 2020-21 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but at the conclusion of the Cup Final, we saw the Habs players surrounding Weber and embracing him one by one as if it would be the last time we'd see Weber lace 'em up.

On Saturday, TSN's Darren Dreger spoke about the condition of Weber during a TSN 1050 segment, which didn't do much to deter that train of thought.

"It goes beyond needing surgery and it's hard to imagine how much further he can go beyond that," Dreger said. "My understanding is the surgery is just to improve his quality of life.

"Hopefully he lives the rest of his life as healthy as he can and he enjoys it because he's earned it. There is no guarantee that Shea Weber is going to play again, I mean that's just the reality of his situation."

These types of rumours have come up in the past with Weber, specifically in relation to his persistent foot injuries. There are a lot of reputable hockey minds who believe that Weber is just playing on borrowed time now.

If this truly is the last we'll see of Shea on the ice, that would be a tremendous loss for the Montreal Canadiens and the NHL as a whole. Weber has been one of the best leaders, captains and examples of pure will and determination in modern hockey.
