In today's update from the NHL waiver wire, it was surprisingly announced that a team decided to send their number-one goalie to the AHL.

A massive surprise awaited fans as the Seattle Kraken decided to send their number-one goaltender to the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the AHL. Indeed, after a very tough season, the veteran Philipp Grubauer was placed on waivers by the Kraken.

Per the insider Frank Seravalli:

This season, Grubauer, 33, took part in 21 games with the Kraken, but only managed to win five of those, tallying 3.83 GAA and a .866 save percentage.

January has especially been a tough month for the veteran, losing all of his five starts of the month.

Could this hint at a move from the Kraken on the trade market? The team desperately needs depth between the pipes.

The team will likely rely on Joey Daccord for most of the upcoming games, who has much better numbers than Grubauer, with a 17-12-2 record, a 2.45 GAA and a .917 SV%.

Grubauer's fate will be confirmed tomorrow afternoon. However, with two seasons left on his $5,900,000 AAV deal, it would be very surprising to see a team deciding to claim him.

The organization surely hopes to see him find his rhythm in the AHL, where the Firebirds have been having yet another great season, standing at the third rank of their division with a 21-15-1 record.

Meanwhile, the Kraken will be back in action tomorrow against their division rivals San Jose Sharks. With a win, Seattle could surpass the Anaheim Ducks at the sixth rank and stop their losing streak to two games. The team will need a strong performance from Daccord to secure the victory.
