Two Western Conference teams have emerged as potential pursuers for Mitch Marner if he enters the free agents market at the end of the season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs organization faces a few tough contractual decisions, with John Tavares and Mitch Marner set to become free agents at the end of the season. Marner's case is especially concerning, as the player reportedly already refused an offer from the Leafs earlier this season.

JD Bunkis made the revelation back in December:

"My understanding of what has happened with Marner is that, actually now, they have tried to extend him a number, and he's the one, and his camp are the ones, that are actually saying 'yeah, we're actually going to wait on this thing and see how it goes. We might want to be the ones that hit free agency."

Brendan Shanahan had opened up on Marner's impact, suggesting the team really wants to extend him before the trade deadline.

"I've learned you don't comment on any of that type of stuff other than to just say he's playing great hockey. He's been a great player for us for a long time. Any time you've got a guy that is that creative offensively, and also not just one of your team's best defensive players, but one of the league's best defensive players; not surprised how he's playing and we're just happy with the way he's playing and I'll leave it at that."

The Hockey News recently reported that if Marner doesn't reach a deal with the Leafs before July 1st and enters the free-agent market, two teams will be interested: the Utah Hockey Club and the Vancouver Canucks:

Of course, it's much too early to tell.

Also, if the Canucks are interested in acquiring him, a trade could happen. With Vancouver looking to offload key players like Elias Pettersson or J.T. Miller, the Leafs could go after either of them in a trade scenario.

Losing Marner for nothing in the summer is the worst case scenario for the Leafs, and they'll likely do all they can to avoid it.
