Players have missed so many open nets that we are practically convinced they would have more goals than Gretzky if they could connect on half of them. It is a sad, painful thought, but sometimes those easy chances just slip away.
Speaking of missed opportunities, we've never seen a whiff quite as bad as the one Washington Capitals forward Dylan Strome had last night. Strome was camped out in front of an open net, right where he needed to be for an easy backdoor tap-in. And still, somehow, he didn't just miss his shot but launched the puck over the glass and well out of play. The kind of moment you really almost have to see to believe. Luckily the Capitals still managed to win the game.
It's hard to conceive how a player that close to the net could blow it that badly; perhaps it's something in his family's genealogy. Even pros are not immune to those spectacularly bad misses. Watching Strome's miss brought back memories of some infamous whiffs in hockey history.
One that really comes to mind is the memorable gaffe from Craig Smith, who tried to go top-shelf on an open net from point-blank range and completely missed. It was painful to watch and a bit of an ego trip gone wrong. At least for Strome, there was a goalie in the crease to make the attempt a little more understandable in contrast.
Craig Smith's unbelievable empty net miss
As remarkable as Dylan Strome's miss was last night, Smith's may still take the cake. Smith's whiff was purely overconfident, while Strome's was a genuine misfire in a challenged situation. These misses remind us that even the best players aren't perfect, and sometimes hockey has this funny way of humbling us all.
