Auston Matthews had an up-and-down performance against the Bruins on Saturday, but after his costly mistake led to an OT loss, he's addressed the play in question.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled to find their consistency in 2024/25, with frustrations from their fans boiling over once again during their recent loss to the St. Louis Blues. On Saturday night, they played a much better game against the division rival Boston Bruins, but would come up short once more, but this time in OT after Auston Matthews played hero late in the third period.
Unfortunately, all of that good work was undone just moments later after a giveaway in his own zone led to an overtime winner for the Boston Bruins, sinking Toronto to their fourth loss in their past five games.
After the game, Matthews addressed the play that led to the game winner, as he revealed that he believed someone was coming back to him, but by the time he realized that wasn't the case, it was too late.
"I thought somebody was coming back & then, as I went to pass it, I looked up & that wasn't the case"
It was an unfortunate play and a mistake that's not usually made by No. 34, and while he didn't take all the blame for the play, he has certainly taken the responsibility as a captain and a leader seriously thus far in 2024/25. After Matthews comments, it was time for Craig Berube to address the play, and in doing so, he called out those players on the ice alongside Matthews when it occurred.
"We gotta support him a little bit better on that play. We left him alone there. It was a mistake by everybody out there"
There's been times this season where Toronto look downright dominant, but at other times they've struggled mightily, with the Bruins game being a perfect encapsulation of that, and now, they will look to use this disappointment to turn around their early struggles.
