Alexis Lafreniere is a left-wing forward who possesses elite hockey sense, with great puck-handling ability and a natural goal-scoring touch. He has taken time to adjust to NHL hockey, a little longer than many projected, but has been hot at times, especially this season's early start. Despite an early struggle in his young career, Lafreniere remains a big part of the Rangers' future and is well-positioned to be an integral piece as his game develops. For this reason, and as reported by Larry Brooks of the New York Post, the team is signing him to a massive extension.
Alexis Lafreniere is a Canadian born on October 11, 2001, in Saint-Eustache, Quebec, chosen first overall by the New York Rangers in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He came in touted as a franchise player in the NHL, due to his dominating play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Rimouski Oceanic, winning numerous MVPs and being named CHL Player of the Year twice.
Once Lafreniere signs a contract above $7 million per year, he would join the ranks as the third-highest-paid forward on the team and the fifth-highest-paid player overall, though Igor Shesterkin's eventual extension will likely surpass that.
He has been off to a great start this season, recording seven points (four goals, three assists) in as many games while skating on the top line with Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck. His development into a point-per-game player after breaking out for 57 points last season has been one of the Rangers' most exciting storylines to this point.
This deal will lock Alexis Lafreniere in through age 30 on a cap-friendly deal. Once the contract does get across the line, it'll likely be remembered as one of the most strategic moves Chris Drury has made since becoming general manager of the Rangers.
