As he gets closer to breaking the all-time goal record, Alex Ovechkin says the current holder, Wayne Gretzky, has been nothing but supportive.

It's always nice when legends of the game stick around and are supportive of current players. Wayne Gretzky, known by many as the greatest player in the history of the NHL, has always been a class act with the current players. One of these cases is with Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.

Since his entrance into the NHL in 2005, he has gained a reputation as one of the sport's greatest players. He won his first Stanley Cup in 2018 with the Washington Capitals, who have just placed Ethan Bear on the NHL waiver wire, their first and only championship win, was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, and accumulated a resounding 855 goals, the second most in history, only behind Gretzky. Ovechkin has already passed fellow record holders Gordie Howe with 801 goals and Jaromir Jagr with 766 goals.

The former Edmonton Oiler has been nothing but supportive of Ovechkin, telling the press about the texts he receives from the legend...

Even when I have a slump, he will sometimes text me and say, 'Don't worry about it. It will come.' He's on my side.

Looks like Gretzky has not only accepted that he will soon no longer hold one of the most coveted records of the sport, knows that it won't diminish his impact on the sport and his reputation in the hockey world, and is pushing the star to keep going. Truly a remarkable figure of the sport, as some could see how being pushed down to second after so long at the top could make the man bitter. However, time and time again, Gretzky proves that he's not only a legend of the game because of his play on the ice, but off it as well.
