The Pittsburgh Penguins have leaned on Tristan Jarry for years now, but with a bloated contract, it appears they may have a major problem on their hands.

Tristan Jarry was supposed to be the future star of the Pittsburgh Penguins following the Matt Murray era, and while he once showed great promise and even the potential of being Team Canada's goaltender at big tournaments, that has now seemingly all evaporated. In three starts this season, Murray is rocking a 5.47 GAA and an .833 save percentage, and with Alex Nedeljkovic's return on the horizon, the team now have a Jarry problem, as he was poor once more in the teams historic 6-5 OT victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

«It was just a tough start for a whole team. Quite honestly, it wasn't even close to our best game out there,» coach Mike Sullivan said. «We just felt like, given the way the game started, it was the right thing to make the switch. I think Tristan was a victim of that (start) to a certain extent. He was also part of that to a certain extent.»

Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, with Nedeljkovic's return coming soon, they will need to make a decision on 22-year old Joel Blomqvist, who has posted a 2.86 GAA and a .913 save percentage in his three starts, clearly showing that he's the superior goaltender at this point. However, Jarry signed a five-year deal worth over $5 million per season in the summer of 2023, and now, the team are stuck with him, even after making him available on the trade market, showing that his value is at an all-time low.

Blomqvist knows that he's ready for a significant role in Pittsburgh as well, and with the fans loving every appearance, it would be brutal to see him sent back to the AHL after such a good start.

«I felt pretty good in this game (that) I had a chance to play,» said Blomqvist. «And I think it comes just from the everyday work you do in practice. I work hard and get a good feel in practice. I think that's the key.»

At this point in time, it's unclear what Pittsburgh will do, and given Jarry's contract, there's not much they can do unless they give away some significant draft capital to get rid of him, so keep a close eye on this situation as the Penguins look to figure out their goalie situation and chase the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
