Derek Forbort, who has a one-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks, has stepped away from the team for personal reasons with no set date for his return

Some tough news for the Vancouver Canucks and their fans. The team, who is winless in three games to start the 2024-25 regular NHL season, will be without defenceman Derek Forbort indefinitely.

The Vancouver Canucks announced this morning that they've recalled blueliner Erik Brännström from Abbotsford of the AHL while Derek Forbort has left the team for persona reasons. There is no set timetable for Forbort's return.

No reason has been given for Derek Forbort's absence other than he's dealing with something personal. Forbort was getting plenty of ice-time with the Vancouver Canucks in his first three games with the team, averaging well over 16 minutes per game.

Derek Forbort spent the last few seasons with the Boston Bruins, but the team decided to cut ties with him at the end of 2023-24. Not long after, Forbort signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

Derek Forbort will definitely be missed by the Vancouver Canucks during his absence, especially after the team lost Nikita Zadorov to free agency over the summer. The Canucks take on the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, Florida tonight, looking for their first win of the season. The team has one loss and two overtime losses in it's first three games so far. The Vancouver Canucks are also without number one goaltender Thatcher Demko as he recovers from an injury. Vancouver is currently going with Arturs Silovs and Kevin Lankinen with Demko on the sidelines.
