Stanley Cup Champion and long time Washington Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetzov broke his contract with the Carolina Hurricanes to sign with SKA in the KHL.

After starting the season alongside phenom fifth overall pick of the Montreal Canadiens Ivan Demidov, the two grew significant chemistry, being two of the most valuable players on Roman Rotenberg's SKA roster.

Unfortunately, only a few weeks into the KHL season, Evgeny Kuznetzov has suffered a major injury, and will miss several months.

After medical tests, we've discovered that Evgeny Kuznetsov's injury is quite serious. Roughly two months are required for Kuzy to return to action. We have put together a detailed recovery plan, Evgeny will work with our doctors and physical conditioning coaches at every stage of the process. We won't rush matters - SKA and the entire league need a healthy Kuzy, who will be able to show 100% of his capabilities. Evgeny is the best player in the KHL, he's a leader of our team both on and off the ice. I have no doubt that fans of all KHL teams will be waiting for Evgeny to return. Of course, his absence is a big loss for us, but, as I said yesterday, all of our guys played for Kuzy, the victory against Severstal is for him and we will continue to win for him. I sincerely wish Evgeny health and a speedy recovery, we're waiting for him to return to the ice!

Unfortunately for Montreal Canadiens prospect Ivan Demidov, this means he will lose his dynamic NHL experienced centreman. He will either be forced to play at his tertiary position down the middle, or be given a worse centre. For such a key time in his development, this is crushing.

We wish Evgeny Kuznetzov the best of luck in recovering quickly.
