The loss of Matthew Gaudreau and Johnny Gaudreau has been felt all across the hockey world. Since their tragic passing fans, players, coaches, media, and of course, family have made statements regarding the sad news. Montreal Canadiens star forward Cole Caufield not only made a statement but confirmed he would be changing his number to 13 in honor of Johnny Gaudreau.
Since the announcement was made the Gaudreau family has mostly stayed out of the public eye. However, today the Gaudreau family responded to Cole Caufield's touching tribute to Johnny and Matthew.
In a comment on Cole Caufield's Instagram post announcing the change Pittsburgh Penguins forward Kevin Hayes commended Cole Caufield for the classy move.
Following the comment from Kevin Hayes was a comment from Meredith Gaudreau the widow of Johnny Gaudreau. In her post, she revealed that the highlight of Johnny Gaudreau's summer before his tragic passing was his opportunity to play in the World Championships with Cole Caufield as his teammate.
This beautiful exchange shows not only how much Johnny Gaudreau meant to the hockey world but also how much hockey meant to Johnny Gaudreau. As the season begins every team will have a tribute to the Gaudreau brothers but the Montreal Canadiens will have a nightly reminder of the loss of a massive presence in the hockey community.
We continue to wish the Gaudreau family all the best as they continue their journey through grief and healing after the loss of Johnny and Matthew.
