On Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced a move that for many, was a long time coming, although no one ever believed it would happen, as they officially announced John Tavares was stepping down as captain of the team. According to Darren Dreger, this will open the door for Auston Matthews, the face of the Maple Leafs organization to become the captain, with the expectation that this will be announced at a press conference on Wednesday.
That press conference will also potentially feature former captain John Tavares speaking, in a move that could go one of two ways, with a graceful exchange of leadership, or it could lean more to the awkward side of a proceeding. One TSN reporter believes it could be the latter, and that there is little truth to the fact that Tavares happily walked away from his dream job.
Ultimately, when everything gets back on the ice, it will likely go smoothly with Matthews, Tavares, the rest of the Core Four and the team, especially with an experienced coach like Craig Berube, but on Wednesday if Matthews and Tavares are both in attendance, don't expect everything to be perfect.
