Nail Yakupov is one of the NHL's biggest all-time draft busts, but at 30-years of age, the former Edmonton Oilers may be pushing for an NHL return.

The NHL is full of incredible stories, but arguably none would be greater in 2024/25 than if former No. 1 overall pick and historic draft bust Nail Yakupov was to make his glorious return to the league. As of yet, there's been little interest in that, but now, speculation has begun online after a video of Yakupov training with NHLer Andrei Svechnikov was released, with the 2012 No. 1 overall pick looking in fantastic shape.
Nail Yakupov is Andrei Svechnikov's new personal coach.
The forward came to the NHL with immense hype as the second of four eventual No. 1 overall picks for the Oilers in the 2010's, but in four seasons with the team, he managed just 28 points a season before departing the league in 2018 after a season with the Colorado Avalanche.
His hockey career hasn't ended since then however, as the 30-year old has spent the last six years in the KHL with four different teams, where he has also failed to light the league on fire. For the story, there would be plenty of interest in Yakupov looking to redeem himself in the NHL, but his recent production wouldn't inspire hope, so while a professional tryout is certainly an opportunity, don't expect a big money deal to see his return to the NHL in the near future.
