ESPN has just published their ranking of the top 100 athletes in professional sports, and fans of the Oilers and Penguins were furious, and outright disgusted.
People at ESPN don't seem to be huge hockey fans, as out of the 100 athletes on the list, only three NHL players were included. The three hockey players on the list were Sidney Crosby in 22nd place, Alex Ovechkin at 54, and, wait for it, Connor McDavid all the way down the list in third last, at 98.
Today, ESPN published their ranking of the top 100 professional athletes of the 21st century, voted on by ESPN «experts.»
3 hockey players made it into the top 100:
22nd - Sidney Crosby
54th - Alex Ovechkin
98th - Connor McDavid
Fans, especially those of the Oilers, were absolutely disgusted by this ranking, and did not hold back on social media, absolutely ripping into ESPN at how little knowledge they have of hockey.
McDavid at No. 98 is a joke. You know the athleticism you need to both skate at a world-class level AND have the hand-high coordination and smarts to make the plays he does?
Hockey players are incredible athletes that other sports can't match.
ESPN ranking McDavid 98th on the «top 100 athletes since 2000» list is a perfect encapsulation of how f***ing terrible espn is and why they should have never been allowed to broadcast NHL games
McDavid at 98 is such a joke... list can't be taken serious #ESPN who made it
@stephenasmith
To those wondering who ESPN ranked as the number one athlete in the world, it was American swimmer Michael Phelps. No surprise there, right Oilers fans?
