As much of the offseason trading frenzy slows to a halt, NHL analysts exposed major red flags in GM Brad Treliving's strategy for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs seemed to be a bigger player towards the beginning of offseason trading. Since the start of the 2024 NHL Draft, the team has acquired and signed Chris Tanev and Jani Hakanpää from the Dallas Stars, as well as Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Anthony Stolarz from the Florida Panthers.
"Welcome Tanev, Stolarz, Hakanpaa, and Ekman-Larsson! Can't wait to see you in the blue and white! #LeafsForever"
Yet, Toronto still has some major problems if they want to be real contenders for the Stanley Cup in the upcoming season. On the Leafs Morning Take, Nick Alberga revealed a major red flag on Brad Treliving's plan with the Toronto Maple Leafs: he did not change their core in any capacity.
"Nothing's really changed. I mean, you could tell me there's been change. There has been, but it's always the same thing. When you have the same nucleus, it's going to be the same results in my world."

Alberga's guest, former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton, shared his sentiment. Without changing the fundamental part of the team, all adjustments on the periphery are pointless.
"So I think as a fan now and as an analyst on the other side, something's got to change," he said. "It obviously hasn't. And again, it's insanity. I agree. I think you're hitting the nail on the head."
With several consecutive unsuccessful runs, it is hard to argue with Alberga and Hutton. Though they have a new head coach in Craig Berube, the same players at the heart of the game may not be worth fighting for anymore. However, there is always a chance for the Toronto Maple Leafs to prove them wrong. Yet, with the 2024-25 playoffs this far away, it will be quite some time before we find out.
