With the Toronto Maple Leafs forward heading into his last season before free agency, Chris Johnston leaked Mitch Marner's plans for the year ahead, and fans are furious.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have needed a change for ages, and many fans believe that it will take more than a change of coach to reverse their fortune. Among the players held responsible is Core 4 winger Mitch Marner, who has now played for the team for eight years.Despite rumors that he may trade away from his team, he has assured fans he will honor the last year of his contract.
"Marner plans to honor the final year of his contract with the Leafs.

Despite fan speculation, Mitch Marner's camp is not pursuing trade options or contract extensions. His agent, Darren Ferris, has confirmed there are no active discussions about a potential trade or extension this summer. Instead, Marner aims to start the upcoming season and evaluate the situation as it unfolds."
However, it seems Marner might not be as dedicated to Toronto as he puts off. According to TSN's Chris Johnston, the Core 4 player will likely walk away from the team when he hits free agency.
"It's probably slightly more likely he walks than signs an extension but not significantly so. If we were setting the betting lines now that favourite would be walks as a free agent."
Naturally, fans have shared their cynicism in this prediction. Many have expressed their negative opinions of Marner, accusing him of using his platform to boost his persona while truthfully having more care for his paycheck. Others simply stated it would be better to trade him now.
Whether or not Mitch Marner cares about his tenure with the Maple Leafs ultimately has little substance in what Toronto can do. With very little cap space to work with and a high paycheck for a still-losing team, it may be better to cut losses ahead of time. However, with little sign of the forward heading elsewhere soon, Marner will likely, as he stated, finish out his last year.
