Carolina Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky just gave us an unexpected update on Martin Necas, revealing his future with the team.

Necas has been in trade rumors all summer long. The Hurricanes have reportedly been trying to move on from the 25-year-old since his contract expired. However, those talks have not gotten anywhere. As such, the forward is set to go to arbitration with the team as they have not offered him a contract that he is willing to sign. Now Eric Tulsky is saying that he is expecting Necas to still be on the team come the beginning of the season.
Tulsky on Necas: "As of right now he's an RFA with us, headed for arbitration where he'll get either a 1 or 2 year contract. And he'll play for us. If something happens between now and then, then that'll happen. But right now that's what I'd assume."
Hurricanes fans are not super happy with this news. The former 12th overall pick was a valuable part of the team last season, putting up 24 goals and 53 points in 77 games. However, many fans recognize the fact that he does not quite fit into the team's defense-first system.
Necas doesn't fit our style. Will coach change his philosophy for him? I highly doubt it move him along where he gets space to flourish and get a player in return plays our style.
Furthermore, arbitration often gets ugly, with players walking away feeling like the team does not value them the same way they value themselves. As a result, many Hurricanes fans are concerned that the team's relationship with Necas, which is already strained, will only get worse if arbitration is completed and he stays on the team.
Arbitration can cause some hurt feelings. Wonder if that ends up souring the relationship with Necas even more?
Finally, the Hurricanes have just one more year before Necas becomes an unrestricted free agent. As such, they will likely have to trade him at the deadline if they are not anticipating re-signing him. Such a move could upset the balance of a playoff-bound team. Be sure to stay tuned as this story continues to evolve over the course of the summer and into next season.
