Edmonton Oilers may be on the verge of benching Stuart Skinner

After last night's difficult loss to the Florida Panthers, there are some thoughts that the Edmonton Oilers could bench goaltender Stuart Skinner for their win or go home Game 4.

The story of the Stanley Cup Finals to this point seems to be goaltending. For the Florida Panthers, Sergei Bobrovsky is having one of the best Stanley Cup Finals performances of all time.

Highest sv% in a Cup Final in NHL history:

.984 — Sergei Bobrovsky (2024)
.974 — Patrick Roy (1996)
.972 — Rogie Vachon (1969)
.971 — Johnny Bower (1967)
.967 — Tim Thomas (2011)

So far, it's the best performance in NHL history.

With Sergei Bobrovsky's success also comes the struggle of the Oilers stars as well. The Edmonton Oilers' top 5 goal scorers this season have yet to score in the series.

The Oilers' top five point scorers in the regular season have failed to score a single goal in the Stanley Cup Final so far

With the offense not coming through for the Edmonton Oilers the team has needed their goaltending to step up however, this has not been the case either.

Edmonton Oilers on the verge of benching Stuart Skinner after poor play

The Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner is not expected to live up to the play that Sergei Bobrovsky has had. Unfortunately, he has not even been an average goalie in the playoffs to this point having overall subpar numbers.

Stuart Skinner in the finals:

— 0-3 record
— 59/68 saves
— .868 sv%
— 2.16 more goals allowed than expected

Is this who Edmonton runs it back with next year?

Last night was bad in particular as Stuart Skinner let in some tough-to-watch goals from the Florida Panthers.

Oh no Stuart Skinner

Nothing has gone right for the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Finals and they need to shift the momentum in their favor. A goaltender change and looking to backup Calvin Pickard might end up being the move.

As Game 4 approaches, we will continue to monitor this situation and see if the Edmonton Oilers actually pull the trigger on making this switch.

At this point the Oilers may as well give Calvin Pickard a start
