The Arizona Coyotes are no more, at least for the foreseeable future, and after big promises, owner Alex Meruelo has gone back on his word.

After years of attempting to get the Arizona Coyotes a brand new arena, the team just couldn't hold on, with owner Alex Meruelo finally selling the team to now become the Utah Hockey Club (name impending). He hasn't given up on his dream of hockey in the desert however, as there is reportedly a clause in the sale that would allow Meruelo and the Coyotes to return to the NHL if they can find a brand new arena in the next five years.

One thing that the team didn't follow through on however was their current employee group, as a majority of them were officially fired on Thursday.

Coyotes office staff just received an email from HR about meetings today between 2 and 3 PM.
Looks like lots of layoffs are coming/happening today.

It makes sense that the Coyotes wouldn't keep their employees around while they don't have a team, but they've come under major criticism for the severance package that they reportedly received.

The people who were laid off (a lot) were told they are employed until the end of the month and then will get a severance package that includes an amount equal to an additional paycheck along with healthcare for the month of July.

Ultimately it was a move that had to be made after the sale, and hopefully the team can bring back these employees if they return to the NHL, but for now, things aren't looking good in Arizona.
