The NHL has fined the Anaheim Ducks a hefty amount after general manager Pat Verbeek strongly suggested players stay in Florida over the summer.

The Anaheim Ducks have been handed a big fine after General Manager Pat Verbeek "strongly encouraged" players to stay in Florida over the summer, which goes against the current collective bargaining agreement. In his 32 Thoughts article , Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman noted that Verbeek wanted teams to work out with a specific coach during the offseason, if they were willing.

"Last season, two teams were found in violation of off-season training rules. Vancouver was fined $50,000 for holding an on-ice 'skills camp,' although players later asked to have the option if they wished. The NHL and NHLPA made a one-year agreement to try, and that has now been extended into this summer. Anaheim was fined $50,000 last week for 'actively pressuring' (according to a memo) players to spend the summer training in Florida with Mike Barwis, who Verbeek strongly believes in".

It stands to reason that if the player's union had to address the situation, there was likely at least one complaint. According to Friedman's report, another team must have asked or suggested players use "wearable technology" during the offseason.

"The union also reminded players they cannot be asked to use 'wearable technology' in the offseason. Had no idea that was prohibited."

GMs always want their players in peak physical performance, which is far given the money they are paying. At the same time, there needs to be some balance, especially during the offseason.

The Ducks will definitely want to improve on the 2023-24 season when the next one gets underway, as the team continues to sit near the bottom of the league despite adding some notable, young names. In his 32 Thoughts article, Friedman suggested it's still up in the air on what will happen with Trevor Zegras, and whether the team will sign him long-term, or try to make a blockbuster trade.
