Although it's unlikely, Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan says he hasn't ruled out a possible return for veteran goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

Lundqvist, 38, signed a one-year contract with the Capitals back in October 2020 after being bought out by the New York Rangers following 15-years in The Big Apple. The Are, Sweden native revealed in mid-December that he would miss the entire 2020-21 season to deal with a heart condition which required surgery. The surgery was for an aortic root replacement, aortic root and ascending aortic replacement.

Less than two months following his surgery, Lundqvist was back on the ice, wearing his full equipment and taking shots at a private rink in New Jersey.

"I think it's impressive what he's doing," MacLellan said. "I see the videos like you guys see the video. I don't know how likely or unlikely it is. I mean, he had valve replacement surgery. It would be pretty incredible if he was able to come back. I guess we'll see where he is at the end here."

"Probably unlikely, but I wouldn't rule it out." MacLellan added.

In 887 regular season games, Lundqvist has 459 wins, 310 losses, 96 overtime/shootout wins, a 2.43 G.A.A., a .918 save percentage, and 64 shutouts. In 130 career playoff games, he's tallied 61 wins, 67 losses, a 2.30 G.A.A., a .921 save percentage, and 10 shutouts.
