Hockey coach sentenced to prison after child dies during training

A Russian hockey coach has been sentenced to prison time following the death of a child during a practice he was overseeing. 45-year-old Vyacheslav Kurochkin received a two-year prison term in a Moscow court Friday, although the incident dates back to March of 2016.

According to Sport-express.ru, Kurochkin was coaching nine and 10-year-old children at a hockey school he ran in a shopping centre in Moscow when one of the kids fired a puck at the net. The shot hit another child in the neck area and he died on the spot.

Kurochkin was charged under a section of the Russian criminal code that involves failing to meet the requirements of the safety of life, resulting in the death of a person by negligence. The court report states he did not teach the children in his care the rules of proper behaviour on the ice or the observance of safety measures. Te report adds he did not minimize the level of danger to their lives, did not comply with the requirements for the prevention of injuries, and also did not follow training.

Besides his two-year prison term, Kurochkin has also been banned from coaching, teaching and educational work for a period of three years.

Kurochkin is recognized in Russia as a "hockey coach of the highest qualifications."
