It looks like one of the best offensive defencemen to ever play in the NHL may be heading back behind the bench. Sergei Zubov - a two time Stanley Cup Champion, four-time All-Star and Hockey Hall-of-Famer - has coached before, with the Russian National Team and as head coach of HC Sochi of the KHL. According to SportsRBC.ru, Zubov is one of the contenders for the position of head coach with Dinamo Riga of the KHL, which is a team based in Latvia.

The report states the club has confirmed the rumour.

"Zubov is one of the candidates. There are three of them so far. You need to wait about a month before the appointment," said Juris Savickis, chairman of the team's board of directors.

The most interesting part of this is Zubov is currently working for the Dallas Stars in the NHL. He was hired in December of 2019 as the team's Senior Consultant to Hockey Operations. Zubov spent most of his NHL career in Dallas and won a Cup with the team in 1999 (his other came with the New York Rangers in 1994).

Dinamo Riga had an awful 2020-21 season in the KHL, finishing dead last in the league's Western Conference and managing to get just 28 points in 60 games.

Besides his two Stanley Cups, Zuboc won Olympic gold in 1992. He is the NHL's all-time leading scorer among Russian defensemen, and the all-time leading scorer among defensemen in the history of the Stars franchise.
