The Ottawa Senators 2023-24 campaign has been abysmal, and now their GM Steve Staios has opened up on the season with major disappointment.
The Ottawa Senators have struggled mightily this season, with injuries, drama on and off the ice and poor performances all leading them to last place in the Atlantic Division.
It's no secret that the Ottawa Senators came into this season with very high expectations on their shoulders, with some big moves in the past two off-seasons leading many to believe that they could be playoff bound in 2023-24 if things went right.
Unfortunately, those expectations may have ultimately been their downfall, with new General Manager Steve Staios addressing just that topic in his latest interview.
"I think the expectations were something that were a bit debilitating for us," Staios said. "We have a young team – a very good, talented group of players. I think that we'll see how the off-season goes on what we can add, but there's going to be growth from within as well.
"I don't think any of our core group of players can be looking outside of just improving themselves and continuing to move forward as a group."
The first time General Manager appears to be confident in this team moving forward however, as they have a young core that still has plenty of time to grow together, but patience in the nations capital could be wearing thin. The team now find themselves looking for answers ahead of another crucial summer, with the next six weeks being absolutely critical in order for this team to continue gelling, but most importantly, learning how to win together.
With the Shane Pinto drama and other things now seemingly behind them, the Ottawa Senators front office have the chance to get this team back on track, with two first-round picks in the 2024 NHL Draft a perfect opportunity to do so.
Still, it's hard to ignore how frustrated and defeated Staios sounded in his interview, and if this team wants to be a playoff team in 2024-25 and beyond, they will need him to be at his very best in the coming months.
