A new story emerged from the trade deadline, and it's shedding light on how the Sharks treated one of their players.

Trade Deadline: The San Jose Sharks Wanted To Get Rid of a Player At All Costs and Offered Him for Free

It's no secret that the Sharks absolutely wanted to trade the forward Alexander Barabanov.

Not only that, they were ready to send him away for free.

From Seravalli:

"Seravalli on Barabanov:

Sharks were calling teams in the last hour and saying, 'Take this guy for free.'"

The San Jose Sharks have been by far the worst team in the NHL this season. They have a mediocre 16-40-7 record, giving them the best odds in the league to get Macklin Celebrini at the next draft.

Teams in reconstruction don't hesitate to trade players for picks to build a solid pool of prospects.

The Sharks did just that by trading Tomas Hertl to the Vegas Golden Knights and Anthony Duclair to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

However, they weren't able to reach a deal for Barabanov. This season, the 29-year-old forward scored three goals and seven assists in 39 games with the Sharks. He's not a part of the future in that organization, and with his contract ending at the end of the current season, the Sharks will likely lose him for nothing on July 1st.
