Bruce Boudreau may soon be back in the NHL

The 2020-21 season is the first in 15 years that we haven't seen Bruce Boudreau as an NHL coach. The 66-year-old has been out of the game since being fired 57 games into the 2019-20 season by the Minnesota Wild, however his time away from the game isn't expected to last long.

As Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic mentioned in a piece he published on Monday, the Seattle Kraken, who are set to begin play for the 2021-22 season, are in need of a head coach. Clark mentioned that both parties have interest in one another, and may make a great fit.

«If you are lucky, one person asks you or you get a chance at one job,» Boudreau said. «It's not, 'I don't think the question is what excites you about the job'. First of all, it is the NHL and it is the greatest league in the world. Anybody that has done this wants to be coaching in the greatest league in the world if they can. It is new. It is fresh. It is a new team and I think the whole idea is exciting. It's not like you sit there and say I do or do not want this job because it is a West Coast type thing. If someone offers you a job, it is an amazing thing. Especially with the success Vegas had. It is not like an expansion team in 1967. You knew then you were not going to be very good or have the dregs of every team.»

To keep busy these days, Boudreau is currently serving as an analyst for both NBC Washington and the NHL Network. It allows him to continue both watching and talking hockey, and remain sharp if an opportunity does present itself, something which very well may happen with the Kraken.

«The way they have gone about it now, Seattle is going to start off with a pretty good team,» he said.

If Boudreau were to get the Kraken job, it would mark the fourth team he would become the head coach of, after three lengthy stints with the Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, and the previously mentioned Wild. The numbers speak for themselves, as he has one of the best winning percentages of all time at 63.5 per cent. His 567 wins currently rank 22nd all time, despite coaching in much less games than many that rank near him on that list.
