There has been a lot of talk surrounding the Edmonton Oilers lately in regards to giving an extension to 27-year-old Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who is in the final season of his seven-year, $42 million deal.

TSN's Ryan Rishaug discussed where the two sides currently are, saying that as of now talks have yet to resume since being put on hold prior to the start of the 2020-21 season. Rishaug says that while it is clear Nugent-Hopkins wants to remain an Oiler long term and the organization wants to keep him, it may be hard to figure out a number due to the flat cap COVID environment. Rishaug also went on to mention the on ice chemistry that has formed between Connor McDavid and the Nuge, as well as how close their off ice relationship has come, making it clear the captain wants an extension to happen between the two sides.

Given the Oilers' lack of scoring depth in their lineup, losing Nugent-Hopkins could be devastating. The former first overall pick has really found his offensive game the past few years, and was having what was shaping up to be his best season last year prior to the shutdown with 22 goals and 61 points in 65 games. Through 17 games this season, he has 13 points.
