It's safe to say the 2020-21 season has not gone the way the Buffalo Sabres or recent free agent acquisition Taylor Hall had hoped.

Hall, 29, shocked the hockey world this offseason when it was announced he was signing a one-year, $8 million deal with the Sabres. This move surprised so many given the fact that Hall has yet to have any team success at the NHL level. The thought was that he would sign with a team who had Stanley Cup aspirations, not a team in Buffalo who has not made the playoffs since the 2010-11 season. Still, many thought bringing in the 2017-18 Hart Trophy Winner would be what finally turned things around, but that has not been the case.

«It's been a struggle for me, personally,» said Hall, who hasn't scored since the opening game of the season. «I feel like I've had some bad luck a bit. But at the same time, when you're not scoring, you got to change something, you got to find whatever is in your game that's not allowing you to put the puck in the net.»

Putting the puck in the net is something the Sabres team has struggled with as a whole this season, as their 2.42 goals per game is 26th in the entire league. The struggles are certainly weighing on Hall, especially given the fact he is once again in a contract year.

«Right now, it's been tough,» he said. «I can't lie to you. If I have four or five goals right now, you don't really know what our season looks like, especially with how close the games we had and how much we've been in games right until the very end.»

The Sabres just recently returned to play after having to take 14 days off due to multiple players being placed on the COVID Protocol List. While the season is just a quarter way through, they will have to figure things out in a hurry if they want to end their playoff drought. Currently, they are sitting dead last in the Eastern Division with a 4-6-2 record and trail the Washington Capitals by seven points for the final playoff spot.
