The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on the globe in the last handful of years, characterized by widespread illness and huge losses of income. The NHL was not immune to it, and as a way of recouping their lost money, they made a heavily criticized decision to allow official sponsorships on helmets and sweaters.

With more money possibly on the table for so many teams, sponsorships are hard offers to ignore. So hard, in fact, that even some of the Original 6 teams have opted to forgo their traditional jersey designs to make an extra buck.
Not to be left out of the party, Brad Galli of WXYZ announced that the Red Wings are the next team to accept an official sponsorship and will don a new patch to signify this partnership at the game between Detroit and The Islanders tomorrow evening.
"The Red Wings are getting their first «jersey patch partner» that the team will announce on Thursday."

Red Wings Fans Upset Over Sponsorship Decision

While some may be happy that the leadership for Detroit will be making more money, most fans are not happy. all of them seem to be asking the same question: Why mess with an iconic jersey design for a few extra bucks?
Though Detroit has already had sponsorship deals with Meijer and UWM, they were only for helmets, meaning this is the first time the Red Wings will have sponsorships on their jerseys. With such a recognizable design, it is no wonder the fans are infuriated over the clear greed behind this decision. Now, they can only hope that this scheme will be stopped in its tracks, or at the very least, reversed in the near future.
