On Monday, Kypreos and his partner in crime, Doug Maclean took some time to address the Sam Bennett to the Toronto Maple Leafs rumours, with Kyper speculating as to what Flames GM Brad Treliving's ask should be from the Leafs - and it was a real doozie.
"The Leafs have to give up future to get Sam Bennett to try and win now. Which means, if I'm Treliving, I want Nick Robertson," proclaimed Kypreos. "You give me Nick Robertson and you throw in [Alexander] Kerfoot, then I can get Lindholm out of that - I can put him back on the wing, and then I've got Monahan, Backlund and Kerfoot. All of a sudden, I think I look a little better."
Ignoring the fact that Sam Bennett has not panned out, as far as 4th-overall picks go, Kyper is talking about the Leafs giving up two players who absolutely empty their lunchboxes from whistle to whistle, every single shift - one of whom has a very high ceiling, at least in the Leafs' opinion, for a guy who hasn't surpassed 36 points in a season, coming into his sixth full NHL season.
What's worse is that even after Maclean played the voice of reason, immediately shutting down that deal from Leafs GM Kyle Dubas' perspective, Kyper doubled down, and seemed to become frustrated at the thought of Maclean not seeing it his way.
"Why? You gotta win now! Why aren't you doing that now?" asked Kypreos, visibly unsettled, as if to suggest that Maclean was out of his mind if he thinks Dubas wouldn't consider the deal.
"Because Nick Robertson, they think, is going to be a star for them," concluded Maclean.
It's not out of the question to suggest that the Maple Leafs might be willing to part with Kerfoot and his $3.5M cap hit for two more seasons after this one - but to suggest that the Leafs would be nuts not to deal Kerfoot AND Nick Robertson for Bennett in a 2-for-1 deal after Robertson's 46-game, 55-goal, 86-point OHL campaign last season in Peterborough.. Kyper is out to lunch here.
Robertson was cleared to return to game action over the weekend, but has been sent down to the AHL Toronto Marlies to find his legs after a month-long layoff due to a knee injury. Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe has already stated publicly that he doesn't expect Robertson's stay with the Marlies to be very long. My guess is that we will see Robertson called back up to the big club after a game or two in the AHL this week, after playing big minutes in all situations and building his conditioning back up.
