When Alex Galchenyuk was placed on waivers shortly after being acquired by the Carolina Hurricanes, everyone assumed it was for the purposes of assigning him to their taxi squad. It appears that is not the case. According to several reports, Galchenyuk has been assigned to Carolina's AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. He is listed on the team's official roster on their website.

Interestingly enough, Galchenyuk has never played in the AHL. His last time outside of the NHL was when he played for the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League in 2012-13. He spent his entire rookie season with the Montreal Canadiens the very next year after being drafted 3rd overall.

Since being taken by Montreal in 2012 and playing six seasons there, Galchenyuk has had stints with the Arizona Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota Wild and, most recently, the Ottawa Senators after signing there as a free agent during the latest offseason. He and Cedric Paquette were recently dealt to Carolina in exchange for Ryan Dzingel.

Galchenyuk's best year in the NHL was in 2015-16 when he hot 30 goals and 56 points. Since then, he has never reached even 20 goals again and his production has steadily dropped off. If Galchenyuk was still producing offensively, teams could likely overlook his defensive deficiencies on the ice, but that's not going to happen when the points aren't coming. If I had to place a bet, I sincerely doubt anyone in the NHL will be signing Galchenyuk to another contract after this season. His most likely options are the KHL in Russia, or one of the European leagues.
