Two surprising names were placed on the waiver wire on Sunday afternoon. The Montreal Canadiens announced that they've placed Paul Byron on waivers for the purpose of being sent to the Taxi Squad. The Carolina Hurricanes placed forward Alex Galchenyuk on waivers, one day after acquiring him from the Ottawa Senators.

With the Canadiens not playing until again until February 20th against the Toronto Maple Leafs, sending Byron to the Taxi Squad will help the team with their daily cap hit. That said, if another team decides to take him by 12 ET Monday, they can have him for nothing other than his salary.

Byron, 31, has 3 points (3 A), 2 penalty minutes, and is a +2 in 14 games this season. He's in the second-year of a four-year contract where he is earning $3.4 million per season.

According to Frank Seravalli, Galchenyuk is currently still in Ottawa, at least for the next 24 hours. If a Canadian team wants to claim him, he won't have to quarantine for 14-days.

Galchenyuk, 27, has 1 point (1 G), 6 penalty minutes, and is a -6 in 8 games with Ottawa this season. If he clears waivers, and joins the Hurricanes, it'll be his sixth team since entering the NHL in the 2012-13 season.

Ottawa signed Galchenyuk at the end of October to a one-year contract worth $1.05 million. Despite his slow start with the Senators this season, it's possible another team takes a chance on him given his low AAV.
