NHL legend and Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy made his NHL comeback last night after the New York Islanders replaced Lane Lambert with him as the head coach.

The move came as the Islanders fell to 7th place in the metro division. The team had playoff aspirations coming into the season so team management clearly felt that a change was needed to push the team in the right direction. So far, it seems to be working out.

Islanders Pick Up Victory In First Game With Roy As Coach

The new head coach has seemingly had an impact on his team already as they were able to pick up a critical victory in overtime against the Dallas Stars last night. The Islanders have been particularly bad in the extra frame this year as the team leads the league in overtime and shootout losses with 11.

Roy Reveals Reason He Chose Islanders In NHL Return

The new head coach was asked about why he chose to join the Islanders this season. It seems as though the former goaltender and head coach of the Avalanche was sold on the idea by Lou Lamoriello, who impressed Roy with his vision and values.
"Everything happened really quickly for sure. At the beginning of the week I got a call from Lou Lamoriello who came to meet me in Florida, and we had a really good exchange. After that he returned to Long Island and he called me a few days later to let me know he was ready to make a coaching change. He asked me if I was interested. After the conversation that we had together there was no doubt in my mind. I was impressed by the man, his values, his desire to win, and it was impossible for me to refuse the invitation to lead his team."

Following the OT victory against the Stars last night, the Islanders now find themselves in 4th place in the metro division based on points. Unfortunately for them though, all of the teams on their tail have at least one game in hand on them. As a result, the team still has serious work to do if they want to make the playoffs. Stay tuned to see if Roy can keep it up with his new team.
