Alex Lafreniere has had himself quite the season after a not-so-great start to his NHL career. How close were the Rangers to giving up on the young star? A new report suggests they were closer than you might think.

Lafreniere Almost Moved

A new report from The Hockey Writers suggests that before his resurgence this season, the Rangers explored trade possibilities for their former 1st overall pick.
There had to have been a point where they thought about moving Lafreniere to give him a fresh start.

When you look at his point totals throughout his first three seasons with New York, it's not all that surprising. The young winger had 21, 31, and 39 points in each of his first three seasons, which is quite low production for a 1st overall pick.
While he's now on pace for 50 points this season, it seems like the Rangers had all but run out of patience with their youngster.

What's Next?

This same report suggests that the Rangers could already be eyeing Lafreniere's next extension. If this is indeed the case, they state that a contract worth around $5-5.75 million per season over four or five years could be a fair value deal for Lafreniere.
When looking at what Lafreniere could get on his next deal, I wouldn't be surprised to see him earn a four to five-year extension worth between $5-5.75 million per season.

Only time will tell for now, but don't be surprised if Lafreniere gets paid sooner rather than later.
