Ever since the Anaheim Ducks acquired Cutter Gauthier a couple of weeks back Trevor Zegras trade rumors have heated up. Reporters indicated the Ducks were exploring moving on from the flashy young forward. In a new proposed trade on social media the Ducks do just that and get back a former first overall pick.
The trade proposed on Daily Dose Hockey would send Trevor Zegras to the Montreal Canadiens for former first-overall selection Juraj Slafkovsky.
The trade would be a major shakeup to the hockey world and would place these two highly valued young players in new situations. With this trade now on the table who would come out as the potential winner?
If the trade did end up being one for one it becomes a very easy trade to evaluate going forward. Who would have the edge going into their new home?
Looking first at Trevor Zegras he would head into a young Montreal team with skilled players already. One of those skilled players is his former team with the USA National Team Development Program Cole Caufield. Zegras has the versatility to play both the wing and center and is electric offensively. He struggles defensively and in puck battles which is a major trade-off.
For the Ducks they would add Juraj Slafkovsky to a young team of players who play a 200-foot game. Centers Leo Carlsson and Mason McTavish both are responsible centers with upside. Slafkovsky would add this same type of player on the wing and begin to develop an identity of what type of player the Ducks value.
Ultimately both players would need to get comfortable in their new spot before the trade would be able to be evaluated. Zegras has the better chance to produce offensively while Slafkovsky could be more of a traditional top-six winger on a good team.
