A recent interview with Samuel Girard resulted in an emotional message given by Girard after his time in the Player Assistance Program.

Girard Spends Over A Month In Player Assistance Program

Over a month ago it was announced that Samuel Girard would be entering the NHL's Player Assistance Program. After the NHL made their announcement Girard provided a statement of his own confirming he was dealing with mental health issues.
I have made a proactive decision to take care of my mental health, and will be entering treatment for severe anxiety and depression that has gone untreated for too long and led to alcohol abuse. Taking care of your mental health is of the utmost importance, and I encourage everyone to speak up and seek help should you feel like you need it. I want to express my gratitude to my wife, family, friends, the club, my teammates, and the fans for their patience, understanding, and continued support.
Girard admitted he was dealing with anxiety and depression that had led to substance abuse. After 5 weeks in the Player Assistance Program Girard resurfaced at Avalanche practice last week.
Now he seems ready to return and has shared a special message to others dealing with mental health and substance abuse problems.

During his first media availability since being out of the program, Girard spoke to anyone dealing with the same issues he has been experiencing. He encourages anyone to speak up and ask for help.

Girard is set to make his return against the San Jose Sharks tomorrow night. He has become yet another example and mentor for anyone who also deals with mental health and substance abuse problems.
