During today's Spittin' Chiclets Podcast episode, the group was discussing Wayne Gretzky's goal record. For years now fans and media have assumed that Alex Ovechkin will be the one to break the record. Today however Biz made a bold prediction that someone else will break the record.
Bissonnette makes a sound argument in favor of one of his evidently favorite players Auston Matthews. It begs the question is he right?
Will Matthews Break The Goal Record Instead Of Ovechkin
This season has been the first true setback for Alex Ovechkin in breaking the goal record. As of now, he has just one goal in his last 10 games and 6 on the year total. He is on pace for a career-low 16 goals. As of today, he remains 67 goals away which is incredibly far if he is only scoring 16 goals a season.
Auston Matthews on the other hand is having a career year in goalscoring. He is on pace for over 70 goals at his current rate. A 70-goal season would be the most by a player since Alexander Mogilny in 1992-93. This type of season is one Ovechkin never achieved meaning if Matthews can put up multiple huge seasons he can afford more of a falloff than Ovechkin currently can.
Both players have yet to break Wayne Gretzky's record. If there is going to be someone to break the record Alex Ovechkin and Auston Matthews are absolutely the favorites as long as they are both healthy and playing well.
